A Chinese company inaugurated a panda-shaped photovoltaic plant at the end of June in northern China. The set of panels has a capacity of 50 megawatts. The aim is to promote the use of environmentally friendly technologies
The "panda", which can only be seen from several meters above sea level, occupies around one square kilometer in the city of Datong, in Shanxi, in the north of the country. It started off with 50 megawatts, but the aim is for the facility's capacity to reach 100.
The plant was named Panda Power Plant and went into operation on June 30. The initiative was launched in September 2016 as the result of a partnership between the United Nations Development Program (UNPD) and the Panda Green Energy Group.
Construction of the development began in November last year. Images of the set of panels have now been released.
The aim is to draw people's attention to climate issues. The "panda" even has a play center that will welcome schoolchildren to raise awareness of the benefits of solar energy.
It is estimated that, in around 25 years, the photovoltaic park will supply homes with 3,200 kilowatt hours of electricity, the equivalent of saving around one million tons of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2.74 million tons, according to "Inquirer.Net“.
Over the next five years, several panda-shaped power plants will be built in China and even in other countries.
